Major League Baseball was the first. The NFL came next. According to reports, it looks like the NBA will soon put a stop to prop betting related to their sport.
The NBA head office has written a memo to teams on new sports betting regulations, according to ESPN NBA writer Shams Charania. Injury reporting is a major component of the new regulations.
The federal case against Miami Heat forward Terry Rozier was still pending in a New York court yesterday. Rozier's attorneys are attempting to get accusations of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy pertaining to sports betting against their client dropped.
Rozier Fees
Rozier allegedly cooperated with bookmakers while playing for the Charlotte Hornets by purposefully missing an NBA game in March 2023 owing to an injury.
A co-conspirator is said to have received the information and sold it to bettors. Over $250K in prop bets were placed by those bettors, which directly benefited Rozier.According to the prosecution, neither the public nor sportsbooks were informed of Rozier's injury, nor was it included in the Hornets' pregame injury bulletins.
New Guidelines for Reporting Injuries
According to sources, teams will now have to update public reports every 15 minutes and resubmit injury listings on game days between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time.
In order to put some restrictions on prop bets involving specific players, the NBA is apparently trying to collaborate with sports betting companies. Limits on "under" prop bets and maximum wagering amounts would be included.
Sportsbook operators decided to impose a $200 wagering cap on micro-betting around individual pitches in MLB games and to forbid these kinds of bets from being included in parlays, just weeks after two Cleveland Guardians pitchers were charged in an October sports betting and money laundering conspiracy.
Limitations on MLB Prop Betting
The NFL informed teams in November of the prohibited wager categories, which include "markets or bets that are inherently or designed to be derogatory or inflammatory, or otherwise based on subject matter against public policy," markets pertaining to officiating, and markets centered around predetermined outcomes directly related to on-field competition (e.g., Will the QB start this week?). Will it be a run or a pass on the team's opening scrimmage play?
